Russia has delivered 50 Tochka (NATO codename SS-21) surface-to-surface missiles to the Syrian military, U.S. officials told Fox News on Wednesday.
If true, this makes it the largest quantity of Russian missile shipments to Syria since the start of the conflict in 2011.
“Russia has just sent Syria the largest shipment of missiles between the two countries to date, the latest delivery between the two allies that could further change the stakes in the Middle East,” the U.S. officials were quoted saying.
The shipment of 50 SS-21 short-range ballistic missiles arrived at the Syrian port of Tartus along the Mediterranean Sea in the past two days, the officials said.
The the 9K79 Tochka (NATO codename SS-21), comes in different types and has a range of 70-185km.
Russia plans to replace its Tochka missiles by the 9K720 (NATO codename SS-26) by 2020
