Air wing of Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov returns to Russia from Syria

The air wing of Russia’s aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov has returned to the naval airbase in Severomorsk, northern Russia.

Upon the arrival of the carrier, several MiG-29K/KR and Su-33 fighter jets landed at a Severomorsk air base.

Russia’s Kuznetsov naval group, was deployed to Syria in November 2016. The group consisted of the Admiral Kuznetsov, the Pyotr Veliky battle cruiser, the Severomorsk and the Vice-Admiral Kulakov anti-submarine destroyers, and support vessels.

Since the group’s arrival to Syria, the air wing based at the Admiral Kuznetsov participated in Russia’s air campaign until January 6.

In January, Russia decided to reduce its military presence in Syria, starting with the pullout of a Northern Fleet carrier group led by the Admiral Kuznetsov.
