Poland order a large batch of self-propelled howitzers

The Polish Ministry of Defense has signed a contract totaling $1.1 billion for 96 Krab Self-Propelled Howitzers (SPH).

The howitzers will be manufactured locally by Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW).

The 155mm howitzers will be built on South Korean K9 SPH chassis fitted with British AS-90M Braveheart turrets.

The Krab weighs 48 tons, it is enabled with a maximum speed of 60 kph (37 mph), and it can carry a crew of five.

“This shows how significant is the emphasis that we place on the development of operational armed forces. From this point of view, the decision to sign this deal has major importance for strengthening the operational armed forces, enabling them to oppose any aggression,” said the Polish Defense Minister

According to the CEO of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), a subsidiary of HSW, this is one of the largest contracts in the history of the Polish defense industry.

Deliveries will start in 2018.
