Armenia’s Head of Armored Service Operation and Planning Division, Colonel Zorayr Gabrielyan has announced that the T-72 tanks of the Armenian Army will be upgraded to T-72B3.
Gabrielyan noted that the tanks will be fully upgraded on the territory of Armenia, with technicians from both Armenia and Russia. He added that certain parts that will be fitted on the tanks will be produced locally, like thermal imaging systems, whereas other parts will be imported from Russia.
The tanks are also expected to get explosive reactive armor, and the choice lies between Kontakt-5 and Relict.
The cost of the project and the quantity of tanks involved have not been disclosed.
Although tanks and military hardware are regularly serviced in Armenia, the project would be the first major tank upgrade carried out in the country.
