Russia’s sole aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, will soon join the Russian task force in the Eastern Mediterranean which currently includes at least six combat ships according to the country’s defense minister Sergey Shoigu.

Military-diplomatic sources mentioned to Russia’s TASS news agency about plans to send Admiral Kuznetsov to the Mediterranean. The sources added that the aircraft which are on deck would be participating in strikes against militants in Syria.

Admiral Kuznetsov’s mission in the Mediterranean is expected to last at least three months.

Last summer, the carrier underwent overhaul to a certain extent, and received new MiG-29K/KUB jets and Ka-52K attack helicopters.

The Russia Navy has been permanently present in the Eastern Mediterranean since 2013
