Hyundai Rotem is expected to launch the production of 600 6×6 K806 and 8×8 K808 wheeled armored vehicles (WAV) for the South Korean Army. The production is expected to start in 2018, with a rate of around 100 units per year.
According to the principal research engineer at Hyundai Rotem, Shin Yong-Cheol, the company is anticipating an order from the South Korean government by October of this year. The initial low-rate order will include 16 vehicles for field testing scheduled to last until the end of 2017. Full-rate production will kick off in 2018.
According to Shin, the order of 600 vehicles will include 100 K806 and 500 K808 platforms that will be fitted with a one-person protected weapon station armed with an Browning M2 HB machine gun. The WAVs are not expected to be fitted with a remote weapon station to minimize costs.
Both the six-wheeled and the eight-wheeled WAVs are powered by a 420 hp diesel engine manufactured by Hyundai Motor Company. The engine provides a maximum road speed of 100 km/h with a seven-speed automatic transmission.
The six-wheeled K806’s main role will be the protection of civilian & military facilities, and logistics convoys, while the K808 will conduct combat operations alongside K1A1 and K2 main battle tanks.
Both WAVs are operated with a two-person crew and can carry up to nine fully equipped troops.
