Israeli jets targeted Syrian Army artillery positions near the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights on Thursday, in response to mortar shells that fell on the Israeli side of the border. This comes after Syrian rebels announced the start of an offensive in Quneitra, in the vicinity of the Golan Heights.

Israeli jets fired at least three missiles into the northern Quneitra countryside, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Syrian military sources said four soldiers were injured in the attack and a mortar launcher was destroyed.

A statement released by the Israel Defense Forces said that the “Syrian regime” is to be held responsible for all that happens in its territory.

It is believed that the shell that exploded in the central Golan Heights was fired into Israeli territory by mistake.

A similar incident took place two weeks ago. Israel responded by attacking Syrian military targets near Quneitra.
