Russia allegedly decides to stop using Iran’s Hamedan airbase for bombing sorties

In a surprise announcement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi announced on Monday that Russia has stopped using the Hamedan airbase for bombing sorties over Syria. Qasemi added that there had been no special arrangement between Tehran and Moscow on using the facility.

This comes unexpectedly after Iran’s Defense Minister said Russian aircraft will be using Hamedan airbase for as long as it is required during a news conference on Saturday.

Some sources point out that the Russian-Iranian agreement was to use the airbase secretly. Whether Russia’s excessive publicity about Hamedan contributed to the decision to stop its use remains to be proven, but Iran was clearly unenthusiastic with the photos that were published earlier.
